Curriculum
Writers' Workshop
This year your child will participate in writing workshop. This includes a time of writing, conferencing with the teacher, revising, editing, publishing, and sharing their work with the rest of the class. We will focus on personal narrative, persuasive, and informative writing. Your child will also be bringing home a Friday Journal which is a letter they have written to someone in the family. That family member then responds back. This is a great way for the students to work on letter writing skills.
Readers' Workshop
Our reading block will include whole-group reading mini lessons, student self selected reading, interactive read-alouds, and word study lessons. Our reading time will also include small-group guided reading, reading skill groups, and time for independent work at centers to meet the different needs of students in the classroom. The end of the 90 minute block is a 10 minute whole group lesson using the Haggerty Phonemic Awareness Program.
Phonics and Word Study
We use the Orton Gillingham program, which is a multi sensory approach to teaching sounds and word patterns. Each week your child will learn a word pattern, and RED Words/sight words. Each Friday we will give a word test to check the skills your child has learned throughout the week.
Math
Big Ideas Math uses hands-on activities and scaffolded instruction. This program has a strong emphasis on real life problem solving. Some of the concepts we will study this year are number sense, telling time to 5 minute intervals, basic geometric shapes, measurement, fractions, 2 digit addition with regrouping, and 2 digit subtraction. Your child will also be learning math facts through an addition and subtraction math fluency program.
Science/Social Studies/Health
Many of our science and social studies units or themes will be integrated into reading workshop and guided reading. The 2nd grade teachers will also focus on certain topics and standards each 9 weeks. Students will also be involved in project based learning science units within our classroom.
